How to Childproof Your Home

How To Childproof Your Home

In the eyes of children, the world is their playground and consequently, so is your home.

Kids are naturally curious. They don’t understand all of the dangers found in a home, so as a parent, it is important to take necessary precautions in order to create a safe environment for your children.

Eastland Construction Inc., in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee recognizes the need for childproofing a home and offers a few tips for keeping your child safe.

Install Latches, Gates, and Covers

Household cleaners, kitchen appliances, matches, and sharp objects are dangerous and must be kept out of reach of children. Installing latches on all household cabinets will ensure that your children don’t come into contact with these harmful objects.

Use safety gates in rooms and on top of stairs to prevent your children from wandering into possible dangers or falling down stairs. You can also install doorknob covers to prevent children from entering specific rooms.

Along with latches and gates, install outlet covers, window guards, and corner bumpers to ensure further safety from sharp edges and electrocution.

Anchor Large Objects

One of the biggest causes of injuries in children is being crushed by large objects found in the home. TV’s and appliances can fall and land on children, so make sure to anchor these objects in such a way to prevent tip-overs.

In order to anchor objects, attach them to the floor or wall. This will keep shelves, appliances, bookcases, and other large items from falling if a child climbs on them.

Install Alarms

Smoke alarms are one of the most basic precautions you can take in a custom home to prevent fire injuries. Make sure to check them periodically and change the batteries once a year to ensure they are in working condition.

While you can see smoke and fire, there is an invisible danger that can cause harm: carbon monoxide. Install a carbon monoxide alarm in order to be protected against CO poisoning. As with smoke alarms, change the batteries at least once a year.
